PAGASA: Batanes, Babuyan Islands under Signal No. 1 due to ‘Fabian’

State weather bureau PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over Batanes and Babuyan Islands due to Typhoon Fabian.

In its latest bulletin Wednesday, PAGASA said these areas should expect strong winds within 36 hours.

As of 10 p.m., Fabian was spotted 575 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes – maintaining maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph.

Despite the public storm warning signal, Fabian is still unlikely to directly bring heavy rains in the country, PAGASA said.

But the agency added that the typhoon is enhancing the Southwest Monsoon, which is expected to bring rains in Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, and the northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Kalayaan Islands in the next 24 hours.

Fabian is forecast to pass or hit land near Yaeyama, Miyako, and Senkaku Islands in Ryukyu, Japan and exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Friday evening or Saturday morning. The typhoon is also expected to make landfall over the eastern portion of mainland China Sunday morning.
