Pope Francis sent his condolences to Filipinos following the death of former president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
“Saddened to learn of the death of former president Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of the Philippines,” he said in a statement addressed to President Rodrigo Duterte and shared by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.
“Recalling the late president’s service to the nation, I commend his soul into the hands of the all-merciful God,” the Pope added.
Aquino died due to renal disease secondary to diabetes on June 24. He was 61.
After a one-day public viewing Friday last week, he was laid to rest at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City beside his parents, democracy icons former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino and former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
Pope Francis met the late president twice in 2015 – first when he visited the Philippines in January, and second in the Vatican where they discussed several issues like terrorism.
